Joan Daemen
Belgian cryptographer who co-designed Rijndael and later Keccak, which became SHA-3.
Daemen developed Rijndael with Vincent Rijmen, the basis of AES. In 2008 he and his co-authors submitted Keccak to NIST's hash function competition, and it was chosen in 2012 as SHA-3.
SHA-3 is built on a sponge construction rather than the Merkle–Damgård design used by SHA-2. That makes it a deliberate alternative rather than an evolution of SHA-2, and it is unusual for a competition to produce an entirely new construction.
