Jan de Wit

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-15

Dutch 20-year-old who released the Anna Kournikova worm in February 2001, assembled in an afternoon with an off-the-shelf virus kit.

The attachment promised a picture of the tennis star and was called AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs. Like ILOVEYOU it mailed itself to the whole Outlook address book, but it destroyed nothing. De Wit, who went by OnTheFly, had written no spreading code of his own; he used VBS Worm Generator, a point-and-click tool doing the rounds among beginners.

He turned himself in after a couple of days and was sentenced to 150 hours of community service. The mayor of his hometown, Sneek, half-jokingly offered him a job in the municipal IT department. The case became the textbook example of large-scale chaos no longer requiring any particular skill.
