Open-source software for playing music together over the internet, with a server that mixes everyone and sends it back.
Volker Fischer started the project in 2006 under the name llcon. Each participant sends their audio, compressed with Opus in low-delay mode, to a server that builds a separate mix for each person and returns it. That sets it apart from JackTrip, which runs uncompressed: Jamulus trades a little audio quality for working on ordinary home connections.
Physics, however, does not negotiate. Total delay has to stay around 25–30 ms for ensemble playing to feel natural, which in practice means the same region and an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi. In spring 2020 it went from niche tool to thousands of public servers, and development moved to a community organisation on GitHub.
