Boulder, HTTPS Everywhere

The EFF technologist who wrote a good share of the certificate authority code behind Let's Encrypt.

When the EFF signed on as a Let's Encrypt partner, Hoffman-Andrews became one of the leading developers of Boulder, the Go CA software that accepts ACME requests, validates domain control and signs certificates at a volume commercial CAs never had to design for. He also worked on HTTPS Everywhere, the browser extension that forced encrypted connections on sites that offered them but didn't default to them.

The extension was retired in 2022 on the grounds that it had made itself redundant: browsers now ship HTTPS-only modes. That is a rare ending for a security project — shutting down because the problem actually got solved.
