The 2010s default for showing a client a clickable prototype — until Figma made the whole in-between step unnecessary and InVision a cautionary tale.

Clark Valberg and Ben Nadel founded InVision in 2011 in New York. The idea was to take static mockups from Sketch or Photoshop and make them clickable: link screens, gather comments in the right place on the design and let a client feel the flow without a line of code. For a few years it was the standard tool in every design department.

A 2018 funding round valued the company at nearly two billion dollars. But Figma's browser-based, real-time canvas ate both the drawing tool and the prototyping step at once, and InVision could never answer. The company shut down its core services at the end of 2024 — one of the clearest examples of how fast a category leader can vanish.
