Info-Mac

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-06

A Macintosh mailing list and file archive, started at Stanford in 1984, that became the Mac world's main source of shareware.

The Macintosh launched in January 1984, and the same year the Info-Mac discussion list started up on the SUMEX-AIM research computer at Stanford. It went out as a moderated digest — posts gathered up and sent in batches — and alongside it grew an archive of shareware, utilities and patches available over anonymous FTP.

The archive was mirrored at universities around the world, so anyone hunting for a Mac program in the early nineties usually found it in a directory tree laid out exactly like Stanford's. It did for the Macintosh what Simtel did for DOS — and showed how much early software distribution rested on a handful of generous institutions.
