Human-Nets

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-05

A late-1970s ARPANET list about how computer networks affect people, conducted over a computer network by people who were visibly affected.

It went out as a digest: posts were collected and mailed in batches rather than one at a time. Topics ranged from teleconferencing and office email to privacy and what it might mean to have a terminal at home. Alongside SF-LOVERS it was among the most widely read lists on the ARPANET, and both attracted participants with no official reason to be there.

As Usenet grew, Human-Nets was gatewayed in as fa.human-nets, letting UUCP users without ARPANET accounts read along. Much of what it discussed — anonymity, information overload, flame wars — had no name yet, but it was already happening.
