HipCrime

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-05

The pseudonym behind one of the most sweeping attacks on Usenet in the late 1990s, with floods of posts and forged cancel messages.

In the late 1990s, groups such as news.admin.net-abuse were swamped with machine-generated posts signed HipCrime. The author also released a tool, NewsAgent, that let anyone mass-post and send control messages deleting other people's articles. It was the same weakness that cancelbots exploited from the other side: Usenet believed the From line.

HipCrime cast it all as proof that anti-spam work was itself a form of censorship. The admins mostly saw a flood to mop up. The result was yet more layers of filtering, NoCeM among them, and even less trust in the cancel mechanism as such.
