An open-source emulator for Atari's 16- and 32-bit machines — ST, STE, TT and Falcon — and the Atari scene's closest equivalent to what WinUAE is for the Amiga.

German developer Thomas Huth started Hatari in the early 2000s, originally for Linux, and the name is exactly what it looks like: Atari with an H in front. It runs either Atari's own TOS or the free replacement EmuTOS, so the machine boots even without a ROM image on hand.

For demo coders, the debugger is the interesting part. Atari ST demos live on switching palette and resolution mid-frame to open the borders, and Hatari emulates the video timing closely enough for those tricks to show up. With breakpoints and profiling built in, many new ST productions are written in the emulator and only test-driven on the hardware.
