Hans Hübner ("Pengo")
West Berlin hacker known as "Pengo", the technical engine of the ring that sold break-ins into Western systems to the KGB.
Hübner was still a teenager in the mid-1980s when he, Karl Koch, Markus Hess and the go-between Peter Carl started handing logins, source code and printouts to the Soviet KGB in East Berlin. The money was modest; the thrill seems to have mattered more.
As Clifford Stoll's trace from Berkeley began unravelling the network, Hübner turned himself in to the West German authorities in 1989 under an amnesty provision for spies who confessed. He received a suspended sentence in 1990. He later became a well-known figure in the Common Lisp world — one of very few people whose CV runs from the Cold War to macro systems.
