- The GKR protocol, advanced composition in differential privacy, multicalibration
Theorist whose name sits on two of the most-cited results to come out of both Goldwasser's and Dwork's circles.
Rothblum did his PhD at MIT under Shafi Goldwasser. In 2008 the two of them, with Yael Tauman Kalai, published "Delegating Computation: Interactive Proofs for Muggles" — the GKR protocol, in which a weak client lets a powerful server do the work and then checks the answer in a fraction of the time. It underpins much of today's verifiable computation and a number of zero-knowledge proof systems.
In 2010 came "Boosting and Differential Privacy" with Cynthia Dwork and Salil Vadhan. It contains the advanced composition theorem, showing that privacy loss across many queries grows roughly with the square root of their number rather than linearly — the gap between theoretical and usable differential privacy. More recently he has worked on multicalibration, a fairness notion for predictive models.
