The antivirus veteran who became the security industry's most effective explainer.
Cluley started as a programmer at Dr Solomon's, Alan Solomon's British antivirus company, in the early 1990s, when viruses travelled on floppy disks and signature scanning went a long way. He moved on to Sophos and through the 2000s became its public face — the person who explained worms and phishing to television and the papers.
Since 2013 he has worked independently, and with Carole Theriault he hosts the Smashing Security podcast, which covers the week's malware and data breaches with more jokes than the industry usually permits itself. His most lasting contribution may be the tone: proof that security can be explained without frightening the audience half to death.
