Alias
Fyodor
Known for
Nmap, insecure.org, SecLists

The author of Nmap, the tool that has made port scanning step one of almost every security assessment since 1997.

Writing as Fyodor, Lyon released Nmap in Phrack issue 51 in September 1997, alongside the article "The Art of Port Scanning". What began as a few thousand lines of Linux C grew into a scanner with OS fingerprinting, service version detection and its own scripting engine, and it has been standard kit in every penetration test ever since.

Lyon also runs insecure.org and the SecLists mailing-list archive. Nmap's largest audience arrived in 2003, when Trinity uses it — correctly — in The Matrix Reloaded, an event rare enough in Hollywood that people still bring it up.
