Valve's first game engine — a heavily rebuilt Quake engine that powered Half-Life in 1998 and laid the groundwork for Counter-Strike.

GoldSrc (sometimes "GoldSource") was the engine behind Valve's breakthrough, Half-Life, in 1998. It started as a heavily modified version of id Software's Quake engine — Valve swapped out the renderer, added skeletal animation and its own scripting system until little of the original showed through.

The engine was famously mod-friendly, and out of it came Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic and Day of Defeat — mods that grew into hits in their own right. GoldSrc was succeeded by Source in 2004 but kept getting updates for years afterward; the name reportedly comes from the directory the source code lived in.
