Ghost in the Wires

Kevin Mitnick's 2011 memoir — the story of his years on the run, told from his side.

Written with William L. Simon, who had also co-authored Mitnick's earlier The Art of Deception (2002) and The Art of Intrusion (2005), it follows Mitnick from teenage phone phreaking through break-ins at Pacific Bell and DEC to his arrest in Raleigh in 1995. Most of the "hacking" turns out to be social engineering: calling the right person, using the right jargon, and asking nicely.

Every chapter opens with a cipher for the reader to crack. The book is also a rebuttal to John Markoff and Tsutomu Shimomura's account in Takedown (1996), which Mitnick felt made him a bigger villain than he was. How impartial a memoir can be is left as an exercise for the reader.
