Rollback netcode middleware that made online play of 2D fighting games feel like playing on the same couch.
The name stands for "Good Game Peace Out". Tony Cannon built GGPO around 2006 to fix the fighting genre's core problem: its inputs are so frame-sensitive that ordinary latency makes them unplayable online. The fix is rollback — the client guesses the opponent's input, keeps simulating immediately, and rewinds and re-simulates only the frames it got wrong once the real input arrives. Done right, a match across the network feels almost like one on the same screen. GGPO was open-sourced under the MIT licence in 2019, and its ideas underpin rollback in Guilty Gear Xrd, Skullgirls and countless indie titles.
