Known for
iPhone unlock, the PS3 hack
Founded
comma.ai (2015), tiny corp

Hacker who unlocked the first iPhone as a teenager and was later sued by Sony over a signing key.

In 2007, aged 17, Hotz became the first to carrier-unlock an iPhone from AT&T, using a mix of soldering and software. He stayed in the iOS jailbreak scene and in 2010 got past the hypervisor on the PlayStation 3.

In January 2011 he published the console's root signing key. It could be computed because Sony had signed with ECDSA using the same random number every time, a blunder the fail0verflow group had demonstrated the month before. Sony sued, and in April the case settled with Hotz promising to leave Sony products alone. He went on to found comma.ai, which sells open-source driver assistance, and the AI company tiny corp.
