Garbo
The University of Vaasa's FTP archive, which supplied the world with DOS software from the Finnish west coast throughout the 90s.
garbo.uwasa.fi was one of the major sources of MS-DOS and later Windows software alongside Simtel, and one of the few European archives in the same league. It was run by Timo Salmi, also known on Usenet for his exhaustive FAQ collections on Turbo Pascal and DOS batch files. Carefully maintained file lists meant you could actually find things, which was by no means a given.
For European users Garbo was also the practical choice: transatlantic links were thin, and a download from Finland finished a good deal sooner than one from Missouri. The archive is gone, but its contents live on in mirrors and on shareware CD collections.
