Surveillance software

Anglo-German group that sold the FinFisher spyware to governments, and whose customer list went public when it was hacked itself.

FinFisher, also sold as FinSpy, was a trojan for Windows, macOS, Linux and phones. It arrived disguised as software updates and could eavesdrop on Skype, log keystrokes and read files, all marketed strictly for law enforcement. In 2012 Bill Marczak and Claudio Guarnieri showed it being used against opposition activists in Bahrain.

In 2014 Phineas Fisher broke in and dumped around 40 GB: source code, price lists, and support tickets from customers asking why the trojan wasn't working. The same hacker went after Hacking Team the following year. German prosecutors later investigated unlicensed exports to Turkey, and FinFisher GmbH filed for insolvency in 2022.
