Anthropologist who studies hackers the way her colleagues study villages: by living among them for years.

Coleman's first fieldwork was inside the Debian project and produced Coding Freedom (2013), on how free software grew its own legal and moral culture. She then followed Anonymous from the inside during the years it went from 4chan pranks to political operations, which became Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy (2014).

The book covers, among other things, how Hector Monsegur flipped and informed on his fellow hackers for the FBI. Coleman held a chair at McGill in Montreal before moving to Harvard in 2022. She is one of very few academics whom both hackers and journalists call when something happens.
