A small reverb algorithm given away in 2000 that has since ended up in nearly every piece of open-source audio software.

Its author, known only as Jezar at Dreampoint, followed the Schroeder–Moorer recipe: eight parallel comb filters with low-pass damping in the feedback path, then four all-pass filters in series, per channel. The right channel gets slightly longer delays than the left, which buys stereo width for free. The whole thing is a few hundred lines of C++, released into the public domain.

It doesn't sound remarkable, and it didn't need to. A free licence and readable code made Freeverb the default reverb in SuperCollider, Csound, Pure Data and countless soft synths, and it is still what many people are hearing when a free plug-in offers a preset called "Room".
