Frank Stajano
Cambridge researcher who explained wireless device pairing with ducklings, then studied con artists to understand why people fall for them.
In The Resurrecting Duckling (1999, with Ross Anderson), Stajano proposed a security policy for devices with no screen or keyboard: like a newly hatched duckling, the device imprints on the first owner to touch it, obeys only that owner, and can only "die" and be reborn to imprint again. The idea anticipated much of what later became Bluetooth and smart-home pairing.
With Paul Wilson of the TV series The Real Hustle he wrote Understanding Scam Victims, distilling seven principles — distraction, social compliance, the herd and others — that fraudsters exploit and system designers ought to take seriously. In 2011 he proposed Pico, a physical token meant to replace passwords altogether.
