An African payments platform that ties the continent's cards, mobile wallets and banks together behind a single API.

The company was founded in 2016, headquartered in San Francisco with its operations in Lagos. The founders included Olugbenga Agboola, who became CEO, and Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, previously a co-founder of the developer training company Andela. The idea was to tackle the same problem as Paystack but with the whole continent in view: a shop in Nigeria should be able to take money from a customer in Kenya, whether that customer pays by card or with M-Pesa.

In 2022 it was valued at around three billion dollars, making it one of Africa's most valuable startups. That same year a Kenyan court temporarily froze its accounts in the country over money-laundering allegations, which Flutterwave denied. Such is the downside of operating under twenty rulebooks at once.
