E-zine

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-03

An electronic magazine distributed as text files over BBSes and later the internet — the fanzine without the photocopier.

An e-zine was usually nothing more than a numbered bundle of 80-column text files, an ASCII logo on top and articles by pseudonyms underneath. No printer, no reader program — just a BBS willing to host the file. Phrack, launched in 1985 by Taran King and Knight Lightning, became the genre's most stubborn survivor.

Topics tracked the subcultures: phone phreaking, virus writing (40Hex, Spain's 29A), security, or just the crowd around one particular board. The difference from the demoscene's diskmag was form — a diskmag was an executable production with music and menus, an e-zine was bare text readable on any machine. Much of what survives sits in archives like textfiles.com.
