PTW attack, Beck–Tews attack

German researcher who took WEP cracking from hours to under a minute, then went after its replacement.

In 2007 Tews, Andrei Pyshkin and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann at TU Darmstadt published the PTW attack. Where FMS needed millions of packets carrying particular weak IVs, PTW could use almost any traffic, and a 104-bit WEP key fell after roughly 40,000 captured packets. It was folded into aircrack-ng almost immediately.

In 2008 Tews and Martin Beck showed that TKIP, the stopgap in WPA meant to keep old WEP hardware usable, was attackable too: short packets such as ARP could be decrypted and forged ones injected within minutes. The key itself survived, but it was enough for the Wi-Fi Alliance to start retiring TKIP in favour of AES-CCMP.
