Eric Corley

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-15

Better known as Emmanuel Goldstein — founder of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly and the hacker scene's most persistent spokesman since 1984.

The pen name comes from the state's enemy in Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four; the magazine is named after the 2600 Hz tone phreakers used to seize long-distance trunks. 2600 mixed technical how-tos with politics, and from 1988 Corley hosted the radio show Off the Hook on New York's WBAI. The HOPE conference followed in 1994.

He lost the first big DMCA case, Universal v. Reimerdes (2000), in which the studios got 2600 barred from even linking to DeCSS. While Kevin Mitnick sat in prison, the magazine ran the "Free Kevin" campaign. Corley himself was never convicted of an intrusion — his role was the megaphone, not the crowbar.
