The largest commercial PostgreSQL company, built on the promise that you can leave Oracle without rewriting everything.
EnterpriseDB started in 2004 with a PostgreSQL variant that spoke Oracle's dialect: stored procedures in a PL/SQL-like syntax, Oracle's system views and package structure. The pitch was simple. Oracle licences are expensive, migration is the scary part, and if most of the code runs unchanged most of the resistance disappears. The product is now called EDB Postgres Advanced Server.
The company employs several of the PostgreSQL project's most active developers, maintains the pgAdmin administration tool and bought rival 2ndQuadrant in 2020. That makes EDB a heavyweight voice in a project that formally belongs to nobody, something the community watches with a degree of wariness.
