DECwindows' own window manager, built on the XUI toolkit and the one VMS and Ultrix users lived with until Motif took over.

When DEC shipped DECwindows for VMS and Ultrix in 1988–89 it came as a complete environment: a session manager, a login screen and the window manager dxwm, written with the same XUI widgets as every other program so that everything matched. It gave windows title bars with buttons to shrink to an icon and to push the window to the back, and iconified windows were collected in an icon box, a window of small tiles rather than loose icons scattered across the desktop. Behaviour was set through the session manager and X resources rather than a configuration file you edited by hand, which was unusual for a window manager at the time.

It did not last long. DEC donated XUI to the Open Software Foundation as the basis for Motif, and when DECwindows Motif arrived in 1991 dxwm gave way to Motif's mwm, which carried the icon box along as an option. dxwm shipped for a few more releases for those who refused to switch and then disappeared, one of several vendor window managers that Motif made redundant.
