CDE's login screen, a descendant of XDM that served both local users and X terminals over XDMCP.
dtlogin did what XDM did — start the X server, put up a login box, hand over to the session — but dressed in CDE's Motif clothes, with session type and language selectable right in the dialog. After login, dtsession took over and restored the windows from last time. Configuration lived under /usr/dt/config, with local overrides in /etc/dt.
Because the XDMCP support came along, a single Solaris server could feed a whole room of X terminals. dtlogin remained the Solaris default until Solaris 11 switched to GDM, and in plenty of machine rooms the grey box with the Sun logo was the only graphical thing anyone ever saw of the server.
