Dope (demo)
PC demo by the Finnish group Complex that won the demo competition at The Gathering 1995.
The mid-nineties were the PC scene's breakout years: Second Reality had shown what a 486 could do, and the next wave was expected to top it. Dope did so through pace rather than technical showing off — quick cuts, a hard techno loop, and effects synced to the music with a precision that was still uncommon at the time.
It took first place at The Gathering in Norway in 1995 and became a fixture on the shareware CDs that magazines handed out. For plenty of people who never dialled into a BBS, it was their first encounter with the demoscene. That it now needs an emulator or a carefully tuned DOSBox config to sound right is a fate shared by most of its peers.
