The company that made the print-sign-scan contract ritual obsolete — click, sign, done, and just as legally binding as ink.

Founded in 2003 in Seattle by Tom Gonser, Court Lorenzini and Eric Ranft, only years after the US ESIGN Act (2000) established that an electronic signature is as valid as a pen on paper. DocuSign built the infrastructure that makes it practical: identity verification, a traceable audit trail and a document workflow that holds up in a dispute.

The name became a verb much as "google" did, and the company dominated the e-signature market well ahead of its rivals. Its 2018 Nasdaq IPO was one of the year's largest. In recent years it has positioned itself more broadly around the whole agreement lifecycle rather than just the signature itself.
