Social bookmarking service

The bookmarking service that taught the web to tag, then changed hands until nothing was left.

Joshua Schachter launched del.icio.us in 2003, on a domain that was cleverer than it was easy to type. The idea was simple: keep bookmarks on the web instead of in the browser, label them with free-form tags and see what others had saved. Tags without a fixed hierarchy got the name folksonomy and became one of the hallmarks of Web 2.0, alongside Flickr.

Yahoo bought it in 2005 and let it stand still. When a leaked slide in 2010 showed it slated for "sunset", Yahoo sold it instead, and it drifted through several owners after that. Rival Pinboard bought the remains in 2017 and made them read-only. By then link sharing had long since moved to Reddit and social feeds.
