DEAL

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-12

An AES candidate that built on DES to get larger blocks and longer keys.

DEAL (Data Encryption Algorithm with Larger blocks) was presented in 1998 by Lars Knudsen. The idea was to use DES as the round function inside a Feistel structure, giving 128-bit blocks and longer keys without designing a completely new cipher from scratch.

It did not make the five finalists in 1999, and Rijndael won in 2000. Building on DES was also an argument against it, since it inherited DES as a building block.
