bcrypt, SFS, Stellar Consensus Protocol

Stanford professor who co-wrote bcrypt with Niels Provos and later designed the Stellar consensus protocol.

"A Future-Adaptable Password Scheme", presented at USENIX in 1999, introduced bcrypt and the idea of a tunable work factor: the hash should get more expensive as hardware gets faster. That's why bcrypt is still in use a quarter-century later. His MIT doctoral work, SFS, was a file system where the path itself contained the server's public key — self-certifying names with no certificate authority involved.

In 2005 he and Eddie Kohler wrote a paper whose entire text was its title, "Get me off your fucking mailing list", repeated. A dubious journal publisher eventually accepted it for publication. In 2015 he published the Stellar Consensus Protocol.
