A French-American password manager that dropped its desktop apps and bet everything on the browser.
Dashlane was founded in Paris in 2009 and launched its password manager in 2012, later moving its headquarters to New York. It took on LastPass and 1Password early with polished autofill and built-in monitoring for breached accounts.
Around 2022 the company retired its Windows and macOS desktop programs and moved entirely to browser extensions and mobile apps, which annoyed some users but reflects where logins actually happen. Dashlane has since been quick to support passkeys, which could eventually make the password itself, and with it part of the product, redundant.
