Known for
Lattice cryptography, FHEW

The UC San Diego theorist who helped turn lattice problems from a complexity-theory niche into the foundation of post-quantum cryptography.

In 2002 he and Shafi Goldwasser wrote Complexity of Lattice Problems: A Cryptographic Perspective, at a time when hardly anyone outside theory cared. In 2004 he and Oded Regev used Gaussian measures to show that average-case lattice problems are at least as hard as the worst case, exactly the kind of guarantee RSA never had.

In 2012 he and Chris Peikert published a simpler, faster construction of lattice trapdoors, and in 2015 he and Léo Ducas built FHEW, which brought bootstrapping of homomorphic encryption down from minutes to under a second.
