Known for
OpenPGP, Autocrypt, DNS privacy, Debian

The ACLU technologist who treats IETF standards work as a civil liberties issue.

Usually just "dkg", Gillmor is a Debian developer and was an early hand on Monkeysphere, an attempt to use the OpenPGP web of trust for SSH and web server authentication. Later work includes Autocrypt, which lets mail clients swap keys automatically instead of requiring users to understand what a key is, and packaging GnuPG for Debian.

As a senior staff technologist in the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project, he pushes privacy inside the IETF: encrypted DNS, padding DNS messages so their size doesn't give the query away, and metadata leaks in the TLS handshake. His argument is that whatever a protocol leaks, it leaks for everyone — including people who have never heard of it.
