The world's second-largest maker of surveillance cameras, neighbour to Hikvision in Hangzhou and on US sanctions lists.

Dahua was founded in Hangzhou in 2001 and grew alongside Hikvision on the same recipe: cheap cameras and recorders sold under its own name and white-labelled under everyone else's. Much of what hangs on shop walls and in car parks across Europe comes from one of the two, whatever the casing says.

The US added the company to the Entity List in 2019, the NDAA barred federal agencies from buying its equipment, and in 2022 the FCC stopped authorising new products. Its security record has handed politicians plenty of ammunition: CVE-2021-33044 let attackers bypass authentication entirely, and vulnerable cameras have been conscripted into botnets at scale.
