One of the first independent software companies, which started out writing compilers and ended up an outsourcing giant.
Roy Nutt had been on IBM's original Fortran team, and with Fletcher Jones he founded CSC in Los Angeles in 1959. The idea was to sell software — compilers above all — to computer makers who didn't have the time to write it themselves. That software could be a business in its own right was a novel thought back then.
Over the decades the weight shifted to systems integration and outsourcing, with the US government and NASA as major customers. In 2015 the government business was spun off as CSRA, and in 2017 the rest merged into DXC Technology along with HPE's services arm — making CSC, in the end, colleagues with its old rival EDS.
