A former New Jersey crypto mine that became one of the biggest clouds for AI training by owning GPUs when nobody else could get them.
The founders came from commodities trading and started mining Ethereum in 2017 as Atlantic Crypto. When crypto prices crashed they were left with thousands of GPUs and nothing to point them at, so in 2019 the business switched to renting out compute. The timing turned out to be almost indecent: by the time ChatGPT set off the scramble for capacity, CoreWeave already had a close relationship with Nvidia, which also became a shareholder.
The model is narrow. No sprawling service catalogue like AWS, just large clusters of H100s and their successors on fast interconnects, leased on long contracts. Microsoft and OpenAI are among the largest customers. The 2025 Nasdaq listing made it the textbook "neocloud" — and a textbook case of how much borrowed money sits underneath the AI boom.
