comp.sources.unix
The moderated newsgroup that served as Unix's software distribution channel before GitHub, SourceForge or even widespread FTP access.
It started life as mod.sources and took its current name in the Great Renaming. There was no discussion in it, only source code: complete programs split into numbered parts and wrapped as shar archives. Each posting carried a volume and issue number so that archive sites could mirror the whole series and readers could request whatever their feed had dropped. Larry Wall's patch and, later, the first release of Perl went out this way.
As a moderated group it lived or died by its moderator. Rich Salz, who later wrote INN, vetted submissions for several years in the late 1980s. Its sibling comp.sources.misc took what wasn't Unix-specific, and comp.sources.games took what nobody admitted to running on company time.
