Document tool that set out to blur the line between text, spreadsheet and app — bought by Grammarly in 2024.
Founded in 2014 by Shishir Mehrotra, a former YouTube product lead, and made generally available in 2019. The idea was that a document could behave like a small application: tables that are real databases, buttons that perform actions, formulas that pull in data — all inside something that still opens and shares like an ordinary doc. The same ambition as Notion, but weighted toward computation rather than notes.
Grammarly acquired Coda in 2024 to build a broader productivity suite around its writing assistant. The "document that is also an app" category has proven hard to sell widely — most people want either a word-processing document or a spreadsheet, not a hybrid that asks them to rethink both.
