Click to Pay

Web På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-30

The card networks' shared online checkout button, letting a customer pay with a stored card without typing the number.

Under the hood it's Secure Remote Commerce (SRC), a specification EMVCo published in 2019. The backstory: Visa Checkout and Mastercard's Masterpass had each failed on their own while Apple Pay and PayPal took over the checkout page. The answer was one button for Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. The customer is recognised by email address and a one-time code, and the merchant receives a network token instead of the real card number.

Uptake has been lukewarm. Shoppers rarely recognise the button, and many checkouts show it next to three other wallets. Mastercard has nonetheless pledged that manual card entry in European e-commerce will be phased out by 2030, with tokenisation and Click to Pay taking its place. That's an unusually concrete promise from an industry that rarely retires anything.
