Apple's software subsidiary, meant to go independent and instead turned into FileMaker.

In 1987 Apple spun its own applications — MacWrite, MacPaint and MacProject — into Claris, partly to reassure third-party developers who did not fancy competing with the platform owner. The plan was a separate IPO, but in 1990 Apple changed its mind and kept the company. ClarisWorks, from 1991, became a popular office suite on Macs and in schools, and the FileMaker database, acquired from Nashoba Systems in 1988, proved the most durable product of all.

In 1998 Apple cut Claris down to FileMaker Inc.; everything else moved back in-house and ClarisWorks became AppleWorks. In 2019 the old name returned, and FileMaker is now sold as a low-code platform. One of the few Apple brands to die and come back under the same owner.
