Cindy Cohn
American lawyer who won the case establishing source code as speech, and who later ran the EFF.
In the 1990s Daniel J. Bernstein wanted to publish his Snuffle cipher, but US export rules treated cryptographic code as munitions. Cohn was lead counsel in Bernstein v. US Department of State, and in 1999 the Ninth Circuit held that source code is protected speech — one of the decisive battles of the crypto wars.
She joined the EFF as legal director in 2000 and became executive director in 2015. Along the way she led the long-running litigation against NSA mass surveillance, which got a second wind after the Snowden disclosures.
