Rebuilding after Shamoon

HypaSec

American security researcher who led the rebuild of Saudi Aramco's network after the 2012 Shamoon attack.

In August 2012 the Shamoon wiper erased the drives of roughly 30,000 workstations at the world's largest oil company, replacing files with an image of a burning American flag. Kubecka, a US Air Force veteran, was among those brought in to put the network back together — an incident response during which parts of the business fell back on fax machines and paper.

She has since spoken widely on critical infrastructure and state actors, founded the consultancy HypaSec and written books on OSINT. Much of what is publicly known about the Aramco recovery comes from her own talks, which is worth bearing in mind.
