Carl Landwehr

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-16

American researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory who wrote two of the most cited surveys in early computer-security history.

"Formal Models for Computer Security", published in ACM Computing Surveys in 1981, gathered the state of formal security models into a single text at a time when the concepts were still settling. For years it served as the introduction to the whole field.

It was followed in 1994 by "A Taxonomy of Computer Program Security Flaws", written with NRL colleagues, which sorted real vulnerabilities by how they got in, when, and where in the system — an early attempt to make bug-hunting something you could count. The idea lives on in catalogues such as CWE, even if nobody cites it in passing anymore. Landwehr later worked on funding security research at the US National Science Foundation.
