camt.056

The ISO 20022 message in which one bank asks another to recall a payment that has already gone out.

Formally it is the FIToFIPaymentCancellationRequest, and it replaces Swift's MT192. The textbook cases are duplicate payments, technical errors and fraud, where a customer has been talked into sending money. The receiving bank replies either with a pacs.004 that returns the funds, or with a camt.029 explaining why it can't.

The operative word is "asks". A credit transfer is final, and the receiving bank cannot take money out of its own customer's account without contractual or legal backing. If the funds have already left that account, which is precisely what a fraudster makes sure of, the answer is usually no. Hence the EU's push for payee name checks before the payment: stopping money is easier than chasing it.
