Atlassian's code-hosting service — once Mercurial's foremost home, now a Git hub woven tightly into Jira.

Denmark's Jesper Nøhr launched the service in 2008, at first for Mercurial only. Atlassian bought it in 2010 and gradually built in Git support, built-in CI through Bitbucket Pipelines, and deep ties to Jira and Confluence — packaging aimed at teams already living in Atlassian's tools.

History's irony arrived in 2020: Bitbucket pulled the plug on Mercurial support, the very version-control system that had once been its whole reason to exist, because Git had won the war. It lives in the shadow of GitHub and GitLab but keeps enterprise customers through the Jira integration.
