BIOS Basic Input/Output System
The tiny software that starts your computer before the OS takes over — since ~2010 mostly replaced by UEFI.
Initialises hardware, finds the bootloader, runs it. BIOS was limited (16-bit, 2 TB disk limit); UEFI handles modern hardware and Secure Boot.
